On January 31st, the moon is going to do something that it hasn’t done in more than 150 years. Many know this phenomenon as the blood moon, the purple moon or the blue red moon. The name doesn’t even matter because three separate celestial events are going to take place during that special night. The result? Something that some experts like to call the super blue blood moon eclipse. It will be an extremely rare sight and worth observing.
On the New Year’s Day, we were able to observe a super moon. This happens when the natural satellite is at its closest to the Earth on its orbit. This makes it look much bigger and brighter than it usually does. So, on January 31st, we will have a full one again, for the second time this month. This is also very rare, as it happens once every two and a half years. Some call this phenomenon the blue moon.
The special blood moon night
Apart from these two amazing phenomena, a third one will occur: a total lunar eclipse. However, if you think that you are going to watch it as you watched last year’s solar eclipse, you are wrong. Unfortunately, people from the continental United States are not going to be able to observe this event very well. On the other hand, people living in Indonesia, New Zeeland, central and eastern Asia, and Australia are going to be the luckiest ones. People from Hawaii and Alaska might get a glimpse of it too.
As for the name of blood moon, it came from the blue light that the moon emanates, along with the reflected red light. Its reddish color inspired this horror movie-like nickname. However, according to experts, the event doesn’t have much importance in the big scheme of events. Still, it’s another reason for people to get involved and watch another celestial event.
