After Dylann Roof (21) was charged with nine counts of murder new details about the Charleston shooting have emerged. Roof was the one who entered the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and sat there for an hour together with the bible study group. Afterwards he opened a fire and killed the nine black persons who were present there.
Friends of the killer have declared that Roof was in fact planning to attack a college campus. Christon Scriven (22) is a black neighbor of Dylann Roof. He confessed that when the two of them were out for a drink Roof said that he was planning to attack a school. At another time the gunman even mentioned that he was considering opening fire at the College of Charleston.
Scriven said that he just thought he was crazy. According to him the gunman could have changed his mind after realizing that a college campus was a difficult target. Scriven also remarked:
“He just said on Wednesday, everything was going to happen. He said they had seven days. I just ran through my head that he did it. Like, he really went and did what he said he was going to do.”
Roof talked about his second thoughts in a police interview and said that everybody was so nice to him that he almost hesitated to kill them. However he decided to fulfill his mission. It seems that what drove Roof to commit the Charleston shooting was his image of a social dislocation and his hate for black people, who to his mind are taking over the world.
The gunman’s family and friends described him as a very troubled young man who has white supremacist views. According to a friend of his, Joseph Meek, Roof is in favor of a segregation between blacks and whites. Moreover the gunman also believed that white people should do something to prevent the black people from taking over the world.
In the courtroom it was decided that the killer will remain in custody until October 23, when his next hearing will take place. Roof seemed to be insensitive at the sound of tears of the victims’ family members. Some of the relatives of the victims want Roof to receive the death penalty, whereas others have forgiven him.
