As the blockbuster offer was a bit of a disappointment in 2016, apart from Captain America: Civil War and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, movie aficionados are eagerly waiting for the 2017 blockbuster batch. The list of the most anticipated movies of 2017 is filled with Marvel and DC super productions, the latter having two more opportunities to wash away the shame of Batman vs. Superman.
The Most Anticipated Movies of 2017
Without further ado, let us explore the list of the most anticipated movies of 2017.
X-Men fans are in for a treat. As age is starting to take a toll on Hugh Jackman’s looks, Marvel considered it necessary to put an end to Wolverine’s tale.
As all comic book lover know, the immortal mutant loses his healing factor at a point, becoming vulnerable, an easy target for all the enemies the gruff superhero made over his long life.
Judging from the trailer, it is going to be an emotional goodbye. With Johnny Cash’s Hurt playing in the background, viewers are shown an aging Wolverine. Even though the mutant is no longer interested in helping his kind, Professor Xavier, played by Patrick Steward, takes Logan on one last ride.
The teaser introduces a girl whom Professor Xavier describes as being “just like [Logan]” so fans are already eager to meet the incarnation of Laura Kinney, also known as X-23.
Take a look at the trailer for more insight on Marvel’s farewell to one of its most iconic superheroes. Don’t forget to keep some tissues close by.
As Batman vs. Superman angered the entire DC fandom, Justice League is already treading on thin ice. Zack Snyder will hopefully wash away the shame now that the DC Avengers will be reunited by a playboy genius philanthropist with no superpowers, but an incredibly expensive suit and his foreign accent female warrior companion.
The team will also feature an eager-to-please, friendless genius teenager, a big strong leader of a mythical nation bearing an iconic weapon, and a presumably dead red and blue national hero. Let us not forget about the half-human, half-cyborg part of the team.
All jokes aside, the trailer looks more than promising. Let’s hope that this installment will live up to the hype.
Kong: Skull Island
12 years have passed since Peter Jackson took a shot at the story of King Kong. Now, it is Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ turn. The director decided to tone down on the romance and focus more on why the giant gorilla was a king of its own island, giving him a group of followers, a mad American that has been observing the habits of locals, and a powerful army.
With a cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, and Brie Larson, the movie promises to keep the viewers on the edge of their seat as they are transported into the world of King Kong.
The trailer also includes a sneak peak of a dinosaur, hinting that we may be in for a treat as the motion picture brings back to life iconic fighting scenes from the classic movies.
War for the Planet of the Apes
The enigmatic gorilla from Skull Island is not the only simian that will take hold of the big screens in 2016. We already know Caesar’s background story. The last installment also showed us his legacy as humans became refugees on a planet now dominated by apes.
The trailer starts with Caesar speaking of his mercy and peace offerings while viewers are shown glimpses of humans sparring with the simian army. Woody Harrelson then takes the scene, shaving his head, and talking about a final, decisive battle between the homo sapiens sapiens and their own terrifying creation.
The trailer ends with Caesar seizing a rifle from a human and bashing his opponent’s head with the stock. Our minds were blown, let us hope that the movie will be as good as the previous installments.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who loved the first installment of Guardians of the Galaxy and those who haven’t seen it yet. The latter should do something about it until May 5th when the Marvel action movie will hit theaters worldwide.
Viewers didn’t know what to expect when the first movie came out. They just walked into the theaters hoping for yet another Marvel jewel, and they came out holding an infinity stone.
Riddled with action-packed scenes that left the audience nibbling at a jumbo drink straw, sprinkled with comical reliefs that made the viewers laugh out loud, not just forcibly exhale a large amount of air from their nostrils, and a final battle scene featuring millions of ninjas cutting onions in all theaters, Guardians of the Galaxy was a Marvel masterpiece.
The second installment has some big shoes to fit in, but judging from the trailer, fans will not be disappointed. Especially since Peter Quill will finally get a chance to meet his enigmatic father, whom, SPOILER ALERT, is a planet.
Comic book fans will take the theaters by storm next year as the first motion picture starring a female superhero will hit the big screens.
Gal Gadot looks like a million bucks, and she seems born to take on the role of the Amazonian warrior princess. Fans will be introduced to the backstory of Princess Diana of Themyscira, a demigoddess wielding the power of truth.
Remember the old photos that Bruce Wayne stumbled upon in Batman vs. Superman? The action of the movie takes place in the past, during World War 1 and the trailer shows us a woman warrior fighting not just a superhuman threat, but also the prejudice and misogyny specific for the roaring twenties.
All female viewers are waiting for a scene where Gal Gadot whips some sense into the heads of the patriarchal figures.
Spider Man – Homecoming
With great power comes a greater curfew. Spiderman – Homecoming continues the story of Peter Parker that debuted in Captain America: Civil War.
Tony Stark makes an appearance, offering the high-schooler a ride in his limo while telling him he could keep the suit if he stays out of trouble. Parker’s answer? Obviously, he gets into trouble while looking for validation from the only authoritarian male figure in his life.
Even though Spiderman – Homecoming is yet another story from the early ages of Spiderman, the trailer shows much potential.
Marvel will more than likely deliver an action-packed blockbuster success and we’re all waiting for Stan Lee’s cameo, but some fans are still hoping to see a movie featuring an adult Spiderman. Maybe Parker Industries doesn’t sound as luxurious as Stark Industries, but Peter Parker is more than just a frustrated teenager.
Here’s hoping that someday, Marvel will decide to focus on other aspects of Spiderman’s evolution and go through the comics that depict the superhero in his later, more professionally successful years.
90’s kids grew up with the Power Rangers cartoons. Now, Dean Israelite is gathering the band of high school misfits and telling the story of the origin of their powers while also introducing a worthy opponent.
It sounds like every other superhero movie out there, but it’s the Power Rangers and 90’s nostalgia will more likely fill the theaters.
Nostalgia is also the main reason why the movie ended up on the Honorable Mentions list. The trailer doesn’t make it seem like one of the most anticipated movies of 2017, but it wouldn’t be the first time a teaser didn’t do a movie justice.
The Fate of the Furious
Vin Diesel is back and more furious than ever. The actor reprises the role of Dominic Toretto, and it seems like the racing guru is up to no good, betraying and incarcerating his friends.
Keeping up with tradition, the team will have to find a way to work with Jason Statham’s character, the villain of the previous installment.
Furious 8 was one of the most anticipated movies of 2015, especially since producers used high-tech special effects to fill in the blanks left by the sudden passing of Paul Walker. Fans expected it to be the last movie of the franchise, especially since producers included a heartrending farewell scene.
The Fate of the Furious’ trailer looks propitious, but some are of the opinion that the franchise should have ended in 2015.
No matter what, the Jason Statham – Dwayne Johnson fight scenes will probably be a delight for the fans.
Special Treat – Star Wars Episode VIII
Disney is keeping one of the biggest secrets in the world at the moment. As Rogue One just hit theaters, fans are getting a taste of the old Rebellion, the Death Star, Darth Vader, and all the other elements of old that have turned the movie franchise into a cult series.
Last year we were introduced to Rey, BB-8, Finn, and Han and Leia’s son, Kylo Ren. We have also witnessed the death of one of the most beloved characters in the history of the franchise and were offered a glimpse of Luke and Rey meeting on a deserted planet.
The internet is filled with conspiracy theories, but Disney confirmed nothing. Since The Force Awakens and Rogue One registered a tremendous box office success, it’s only natural to expect Episode VIII to live up to the hype.
The most probable scenario is that Rey and Luke will have a Luke – Obi-Wan moment where Rey will be introduced to the ways of the force.
Since there is also going to be an Episode IX, it’s possible that Rey’s mysterious ancestry will not be revealed in the 2017 movie.
Ever since George Lucas amazed the cinematic world in the 70’s, Star Wars has always been of the most anticipated movies ever. And while episodes I, II, and III are surrounded by controversy, episode VIII has been a tremendous success.
While our list of the most anticipated movies of 2017 is not exhaustive, we tried to pick the blockbusters that have made the hearts of millions pound faster when the first teasers were introduced.
Here’s to a great blockbuster year.
