Specialists are always trying to come up with new treatments and methods to cure diseases or at least to ease up people’s pain. This time, they have been working on a new drug which can reduce memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients, who are diagnosed with the early stage of the disease.
The new drug is called aducanumab and was created in the lab. It went through a trial and showed that it could lower the amount of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain, which is specific to Alzheimer’s patients. It also proved itself efficient with other patients who suffered from mild forms of memory loss.
A group of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease received aducanumab, while another group was administered placebo medication. When the trial period passed, doctors noticed an improvement in the capacity of memorizing of the patients in the first group.
What the new drug does is fight against amyloid plaques in the brain. This gives researchers hope that soon they will be able to develop an even more efficient treatment against Alzheimer’s disease. Now they have a starting point, namely, reducing the damaging beta-amyloid proteins.
Specialists have been acknowledging the damaging effects of clumps of beta-amyloid for more than two decades. They found the clumps when analyzing the brains of people who died and suffered from the disease. Now they started to find ways of fighting this potential cause.
Ever since doctors have been trying to determine whether excessive beta-amyloid proteins stand as the real cause of Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, there are no definite answers.
For the time being, medical technology has advanced so that doctors can now determine the level of beta-amyloid of their patients. All of them show symptoms of various stages of memory loss, confusion, and loss of reasoning.
The new drug, recently tested by specialists, manages not only to reduce the level of beta-amyloid but also to slow the development of the disease into dementia.
Developers are aware of the fact that their latest study on aducanumab was not carried out on a large scale, but they are confident about the results. They also intend to enlarge upon the findings. They hope their endeavor will lead to a better treatment for the terrible disease, perhaps a proper cure.
The results of the study were published yesterday in the journal Nature.
