The opioid epidemic is one of the biggest problems in the US. Opioids took the lives of thousands of people over the last few years. Despite the fact that state officials are trying to get the situation under control, a new trend just appeared. Law enforcement agencies are warning people about the fact that heroin is now laced with a deadly elephant tranquilizer. This is named carfentanil.
The substance is 100 times stronger than fentanyl and 10,000 stronger than morphine. Two milligrams of this elephant tranquilizer are lethal to humans. The biggest problem with it is that it can be absorbed by the skin. Just a small puff that touches the skin can kill a person. Also, a drug-sniffing dog can be instantly killed if it takes a whiff of this drug.
Despite the fact that carfentanil is already causing overdoses, health officials are unable to identify it in overdose cases. This is because it is very dangerous. The number of deaths resulting from this drug is alarming. Although this is a new trend, the drug is already very powerful, and it is starting to spread fast.
This elephant tranquilizer started to appear in heroin last fall. Law enforcement officers reported several cases in which they found heroin laced with this drug. Even the law enforcement officers can be killed by this substance if they enter into contact with it. Because it is so powerful and that skin can absorb it, the risk of intoxication is very high.
Overdoses with this elephant tranquilizer can be reversed with naloxone. The problem is that this drug is much stronger than any other opioid. It takes several doses of naloxone to reverse an overdose. This is why the number of overdoses has increased. Law enforcement agencies from Hamilton County respond to 60 overdoses a week. Since this drug started spreading, the overdoses reports have risen to 200 a week.
The states which reported deaths caused by this elephant tranquilizer include West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Wisconsin, Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, as well as others. It is important to know that this drug is spreading very fast and that it is extremely powerful.
