Markeith Loyd, the 41-year-old man from Orlando who shot and killed his pregnant girlfriend and the law enforcement officer who tried to arrest him, was captured on Tuesday night by a SWAT team. Orlando officials declared that the suspect was captured in abandoned house.
Orlando PD’s official spokespersons declared that Markeith Loys, the fugitive who murdered his pregnant girlfriend in cold floor and allegedly shot and killed another officer who tried to take him into custody was arrested on Tuesday night, after a two-week statewide manhunt.
Loyd’s has been on the run ever since he killed his girlfriend, Sade Dixon on the 9th of December. After killing Dixon, Loyd fled the scene. Later that night, Sergeant Debra Clayton received a tip from a Walmart client who said that a man matching Loyd’s description was sighted in the supermarket parking lot.
The officer went to the supermarket’s parking lot to verify the man’s claims. Clayton saw the suspect near a parked vehicle and went to confront him. At some point, Loyd drew out his gun and shot the police officer. Clayton died at the local hospital to her severe injuries.
However, this was not Loyd’s last victim. According to the officials, Norman Lewis, an Orange County Deputy died the same night in a brutal car accident, while pursuing the suspect. Dixon’s brother, who was inside Sade’s home during the attack, was also injured by Loyd when he tried to help his sister.
After Lewis’s death, Orlando’s Police Department initiated a statewide manhunt for the suspect and offered a $125,000 cash reward to anyone who offers information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect.
John Mina, a law enforcement officers involved in the manhunt and Orlando’s Chief of Police, declared that after they’ve received hundreds of tips from people who wanted to collect the price put on Loyd’s head, but all of them were misleading.
Before the SWAT team capture Markeith Loyd on Tuesday, Orlando’s PD managed to round up several people, suspected of giving aid to the fugitive, including Zarghee Mayan, Loyd’s ex-girlfriend. Mayan, who was also the man’s former co-worker, declared that she saw the Markeith Loyd wearing a bulletproof vest.
The suspect was captured in an abandoned house, which was located near the home of Clayton’s mother. John Mina said that the officers who took Markeith Loyd in custody found a bulletproof vest, two high-powered handguns, and a drum magazine containing 100 bullets.
