Do you want to find out the recipe to the perfect family escapade? Then try out to rent a boat in Monterey Bay. The view is breath-taking, and there are high chances you might pick up an unexpected hitchhiker along the way.
John Koester and Heather Van Nes, a couple from the United States, decided to celebrate Koester’s birthday in a more unusual setting. So, instead of a traditional birthday party involving lots of guests and maybe a barbecue, the couple decided to spend the day kayaking in Monterey Bay.
Their adventure started on Monday morning. After renting a kayak from the nearby boat shop, the couple began exploring the Monterey Bay. Van Nes recalls that after paddling for some time, they’ve spotted several otters swimming in the water. They took their kayak within 50 feet of the friendly creatures in order to snap a few pictures.
However, one of the otters left the group and started swimming towards the couple’s kayak. In a matter of minutes, the curious otter reached the couple’s kayak, and jumped right in, making himself at home. According to the couple’s statements, the otter must have weighed more than 80 pounds, and it was not aggressive.
Instead, after jumping into the couple’s kayak, the friendly creature made a couple of rolls and started scratching his belly. Koester said that the otter seemed to enjoy the company of its new-found friends, and spent at least 10 minutes on the kayak.
The otter decided to rejoin his kind after the couple started paddling towards the shore. Of course, the couple said that this even didn’t surprise them, as they were instructed to expect a visit from the friendly otters.
Many boat renters declared that on many occasions, they’ve have met friendly and curious otters who jumped on their boats without any reasons. In addition, the marine biologists working in the Monterey Bay area said that encounters between boat owners and otters quite frequent in this part, and that, most of the time, these encounters are friendly.
However, the marine biologists cautioned tourists to steer clear of the otters. They may be friendly, but they even the friendliest species can go berserk if someone intrudes on their territory.
As for the couple, needless to say, that the man had the time of his life.
