The red wolves are presently free to roam a five-county area in the United States, which measures approximately two million acres. However, their situation will be different starting next year. Federal authorities made a decision that environmentalists didn’t receive very well. The new federal plan includes restricting the red wolf territory.
The red wolf territory is crucial for their survival, as specialists in wildlife state. They explain that the wolves are protected within those borders. If their territories are shrunk, there are much more chances for the animals to go beyond the frontiers, where they are exposed to all sorts of danger, including that of humans shooting them.
Authorities announced that the wolves which trespass the new borders would be taken to zoos. People in charge of conservation programs do not agree with this measure. They continue to militate for the red wolves rights of having a wider territory of their own, where they could be safe and wander freely.
The new red wolf territory will be restricted to a small area in Dare County, to which a wildlife sanctuary is added. This will be the new home for about forty-five red wolves in North Carolina. Their population numbers have severely decreased, as there were at least one hundred individuals living in North Carolina four years ago.
Specialists claim that red wolves are the most endangered wolf species in the world. As a result, they complain about the new federal regulations. They are also worried because there are only three breeding pairs which are monitored by biologists. However, they intend to find new wide spaces for the red wolves to live in the wild.
Local people report about the behavior of red wolves. According to them, the animals have interbred with coyotes. Landowners admit that they shot coyotes for interfering with their livestock, and perhaps among them were red wolves too. People complain about the wild animals attacking the cattle and even their pets.
The situation of red wolves is intricate. They are considered to be extinct since 1980. However, the species managed to survive thanks to the efforts of environmentalists, who took good care of captive breeding pairs. Specialists are not sure about the current status of red wolves, but one thing is certain, namely that there are few individuals left and that they must be protected.
Federal authorities announced their new plan on reducing the red wolf territory at the beginning of the week, on Monday.
