Two scientists have recently proposed a theory which talks about the possibility that an industrial civilization existed on Earth before us. And if that was the case, how would we know about their existence? Professor Adam Frank from the University of Rochester and Dr. Gavin Schmidt from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies called their idea the Silurian Hypothesis. The International Journal of Astrobiology recently published it. They came up with this theory after realizing that nobody has ever been able to find any signs that a previous civilization lived here before us.
The idea for the study came to them when they were talking about climate change. Their problem was that the fossils records don’t go beyond 2.6 million years ago. So, if something indeed existed before, it has been already turned to dust by the passage of time. This also makes it clear than the possible industrial civilization was most likely not human, considering that they appeared much later. They named their theory after an episode of the British sci-fi TV how Doctor Who. In that episode, a reptilian race called Silurians lived on Earth before us but went into deep hibernation under the surface.
The interesting Silurian Hypothesis
Millions of years in the future, our heirs will surely be able to find traces of our own industrial civilization. From climate change to the materials left behind like plastics and metal. Fossils will exist, but not very many. There will be evidence, but not too clear. What if this is what happens now, and we simply miss the evidence that another civilization came before us?
According to the authors, this is unlikely. So now, they are focusing on finding what footprints will climate change leave behind and how will it affect our own. This will help us understand more about this phenomenon than we think.
