During the recent F8 conference, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder, and CEO announced that the social media platform is getting a major overhaul in the form of Spaces, a fully-VR environment where you can chat and interact with your friends and family.
According to Zuckerberg’s announcement, Spaces is compatible with Oculus Rift, and even support the kinetic controller feature. The novel application will be available for download from Oculus Rift’s official website.
What is Facebook Spaces?
As you know, the emergence of virtual reality technology has opened new doors to developers, filmmakers, and scientists. Vr is the much-needed answer to the whole immersion dilemma. While most developers have started designing VR-ready games, it would appear that the clever gadget has managed to make its way into one of the most popular areas of the Internet – social media.
In essence, Facebook Spaces is like taking all of Facebook’s great assets like picture sharing, chatting, and groups, and putting them in a masterfully generated virtual reality world. Once there, you can interact with your friends and family members using your kinetic controllers and engage in various activities such as playing games or making group selfies.
How Do I Start my First Facebook Spaces Experiences?
First of all, you should know that Spaces is still in its infancy, which means that the company still has a couple of things to work on before the interface is as stable as its sibling. Now, in order to start using Spaces, the first thing you’ll need is to buy an Oculus Rift gadget and the kinetic controllers. Look for bundle offers on e-commerce websites such as Amazon. You might even walk off with you first VR headset without spending too much money.
Keep in mind that you must also have a powerful enough PC to run Oculus. Check with the company’s website to see if you rig meets the minimum requirements.
The second step is to download and install the Facebook Spaces app from Rift’s online store. After that, you will be asked to create an avatar. Of course, with the help of the controllers, you can edit your character’s appearance in real time. Alternatively, the app can create an avatar based on profile’s pics.
Now it’s time to create your first Space aka the virtual reality world which will be populated by your friend and family members. Once that’s done, you can simply invite them to participate, just like you do when you want to create a group chat.
In this VR space, you can talk to your guests, play games with them, explore the world, and even make selfies.
