Chemical sunscreen is more expensive than physical sunscreen, which is hypoallergenic and offers more protection for people who have a skin more vulnerable to sunburns.
The role of sunscreen is to block the harmful ultraviolet rays which are divided into UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays most often cause sunburns, and they are more common than UVA rays.
On the other hand, UVA rays have a long wavelength, meaning that they can penetrate the skin deeper increasing the risk of developing skin cancer, age spots, wrinkling, and premature skin aging.
Experts recommend people to look for products which have the ‘broad-spectrum’ label because it means that they are efficient against both UVB and UVA rays. Physical sunscreen has the effect of reflecting the light or absorbing it.
Despite the fact that some products might be labeled as waterproof, dermatologists underline that customers should not fall for that. Instead, they should reapply it at every two hours, after swimming, or excessive sweating.
Regarding the sun protection factor, SPF 15 sunscreen offers 93 percent sun protection, whereas SPF 30 products provide 97 percent block against UV rays. Everything higher than SPF 30 offers just a little additional protection of 98 to 99 percent.
Scientists state that people with sensitive skin may choose higher SPF if they want to make sure that they won’t get sunburnt. Usually, the best idea would be to go for SPF 30 products, because they are efficient and not as expensive as SPF 50 sunscreens or higher.
The biggest issue among people is not the fact that they don’t rely on sunscreen, but that they do not apply it correctly. Experts came to the conclusion that most people do not use enough sunscreen, and they do not cover every part exposed to the sun.
But the whole sun protection package also includes protective clothing such as hats, long-sleeved shirts, and UV protecting sunglasses. People should avoid the hottest hours of the day and seek shade until the temperatures lower a bit.
If people follow this simple set of rules, dermatologists believe that the chances of getting sunburnt this summer are substantially reduced.
