Alaska hosted the sixth walk for breast cancer this weekend. The event took place on Saturday when people gathered at the Delaney Park Strip to make a stand against the terrible disease. Although it might be considered a young event, it managed to raise significant amounts of money for research.
The walk for breast cancer is called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, and it has been taking place for six years now. The event was organized for the first time in 2010, and ever since, it has been raising approximately one million dollars. The money is always donated to patients in need and their families, as well as for medical research.
The purpose of the annual event is to raise awareness about the disease, especially for Alaska natives. According to specialists, almost five hundred women in Alaska will have been diagnosed with breast cancer by the end of the year. They also predict that more than seventy patients will die because of it. However, cancer is often a deadly disease and patients know what to expect from it.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is not addressing only volunteers to help them spread the news on their initiative and make it real. The organizers also address cancer survivors who might need support. Officials account for cases when the patients have no family, and it is difficult for them to go through such a harsh period on their own. So they can ask for the help of people at the association.
Specialists advise women to go for regular tests to the doctor because the only solution to fight the disease is the early diagnostic. However, a recent study in the medical field revealed that there is also a test which can help breast cancer survivors. Treatment for cancer includes chemotherapy, but thanks to this test, some patients have the chance of not going through this painful recovery process. The test is called MammaPrint.
Doctors also suggest that genetic testing is very important when it comes to breast cancer. Medical history of the family can show the chances of a woman to develop the disease. However, specialists always try to come up with the best solutions and strategies to fight the disease. People who organize events such as the walk for breast cancer help them spread the information.
